First Prediction for December 14, 2020

Good evening everyone! We have a lot of things happening weather-wise this week. I would first like to talk about Monday.

Light snow is in the cards for late Monday morning into Monday afternoon. However, there is disagreement among model guidance and forecasts. The start time currently varies as early as 8 AM to as late as 12 PM; snowfall projections currently vary between nothing to 2 inches. To add more fun to the mix, air temperatures will be around freezing while ground temperatures will be above freezing, dampening road accumulations. Given these variables, I am going with a conservative approach and favoring a Regular Day for now. I will not surprised if we see these percentages fluctuate as we get closer to Monday and ambiguities resolve. The prediction graphic is below.

Now to address the elephant in the room: Wednesday and Thursday. Model guidance and forecasts have been in good agreement for a major snow event in the Northeast, with the Poconos probably in the “jackpot zone.” There is still opportunity for the storm to shift north or south, but I suspect this will just shift the bullseye area. I think it’s reasonable to say that our area will at least receive 6 inches of snow and I my gut is telling me we could see over 12 inches. In the worse-case scenario (or best-case if you are a snow lover), school impacts could occur on Wednesday (early dismissals), Thursday (closings), and Friday (delays). I know that schools are using the hybrid model and I do know that all students are virtual on Wednesday, but teachers are still going to the buildings and major snow plus wind can cause power outages. I know some schools outside of our area are not doing delays with their hybrid models, so we will have to watch how things pan out. I will be issuing predictions as normal and we will adapt as we go.

I plan on issuing the Second Prediction for Monday tomorrow morning. Have a good evening everyone and thank you for the support!
