FINAL Prediction for Wednesday, December 18, 2019

Good evening everyone! Thank you to those who submitted pictures, videos, and observations of roads as it helped paint a better picture as to how the county is fairing after today’s ice event.

About 0.2 to 0.4 inches of ice fell throughout the county. The key behind how schools may react tomorrow is mostly on the flash freeze potential tonight. Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid and lower 20s as the night progresses. However, for a flash freeze to pan out, there needs to be enough slushy/ice on the roadways to beat the dry and windy air. Roads that are just wet will likely dry up in time before they freeze over, while slushy roads will have enough liquid to beat the dry air and freeze.

Road conditions vary throughout the county and especially by elevation. Roads around Pocono Mountain school district are slushy, while roads in the other districts are predominately wet. Given this, I think it is very possible that school districts within the county may not react in unison, which is why I am favoring a “split” scenario. The lack of snowfall from today’s event also contributed to the lower delay odds compared to the Second Prediction from yesterday.

I anticipate schools will most likely wait until tomorrow morning to make a decision. I will be monitoring for any announcements tonight just in case though. Have a safe evening everyone and thank you for the support!
