Good evening everyone! A Freezing Rain Advisory has been been issued for our area and will go into effect from 4 AM until 10 AM tomorrow morning. Since school reactions are possible, a Final Prediction has been published. However, this is not a straight-forward call…
The timing of the advisory is right in the middle of the morning bus runs, so I suspect there is going to be some type of reaction. The question is what, if anything. The critical factor in determining the school districts’ decision will be how much ice we receive. Right now, we are expected to accumulate roughly 0.05″ of ice. While this is not a lot, the timing during the morning bus runs makes it concerning.
The other issue is any overperformance of this event could result in school closings. Back on January 2 of this year, light ice was expected throughout NE PA during the morning bus runs. Schools that happened to be open (most were off due to the winter holiday) closed without conducting a delay with a re-evaluation; the ice circumstances were similar to tomorrow’s event. I am being more aggressive than usual because the last prediction (which dealt with ice) was too conservative. I also think the likelihood of this event overperforming is higher than it underperforming.
Let me stress: this situation can go either way. Believe me, you do not want to be in my shoes trying to predict for tomorrow morning. I will be up early to watch for any announcements. If you want to get text alerts in case the school districts react, text @vwwmonroe to 81010. Thank you for the support and have a good evening!
