Good afternoon everyone. What seems like an endless stream of school reactions is only going to continue… possibly for the rest of the week. Below are the FINAL Prediction for Wednesday, the Second Prediction for Thursday, and the First Prediction for Friday, January 30, 2026.
Pretty much all schools in NEPA closed or went virtual today due to poor road conditions. Based on road observations submitted by the community, it appears conditions have not materially improved compared to yesterday. To add insult to injury, snow showers passed over the region this afternoon, adding another layer of snow on top of partially plowed roads. That said, I do think there is an element of districts wanting to go back into physical teaching at some point – that transition is going to be hard to pinpoint. All of that said, I am still favoring closings/virtual days for tomorrow but at a slightly lower margin. For now, I am going to favor delays for Thursday, but this could easily change depending on how schools react tomorrow and how road conditions evolve over the next 24 hours.
To top it off, the wind chills are going to get worse, getting as low as the -20s by Friday morning. This will likely trigger Extreme Cold Warnings, which have a tendency (not a guarantee) to cause closings and virtual days. In short, yes, there is a very realistic chance that some schools may be closed or virtual for the entire week – a rarity without question.
The good news is the potential storm concern for this upcoming weekend appears to be trending offshore; it’s still too early to lock in that outcome, but so far it is trending that way.
The plan for tomorrow is we will repeat the same procedure as today – gather road observations around noon, then issue updated predictions tomorrow afternoon. Thank you everyone for your support and assistance – it is greatly appreciated. Be safe and keep an eye out for school alerts!
