Second Prediction for Wednesday, January 17, 2024

Good morning everyone and Happy Tuesday! Attached is the Second Prediction for Wednesday, January 17, 2024 and there are some changes to the percentages.

Schools throughout the region have closed due to observed and expected snowfall, with many schools that delayed last night converting to closings or virtual days. So far, around three inches of snowfall has occurred in the northern half of Monroe County while about 2 inches has occurred in the southern half of the county with no current precipitation. What appears to be happening is sinking air has developed between I-80 and Philadelphia, resulting in less snowfall.

Based on the current radar and examining short-range model guidance, I suspect this sinking air/lack of snow will continue for the rest of the event and therefore I think the more valley oriented schools will go in on time tomorrow. As for the northern parts of the county, I still anticipate snowfall to continue through today as originally forecast and as a result I still favor delays for tomorrow. In total, I think half of the county is favored to delay while the other half is favored to go in on time tomorrow. It is possible for snow to fill back in later today and the Final Prediction percentages can still change depending on what happens for the remaining of the day; I would rather make adjustments now towards a more conservative outcome based on what I am observing.

I plan on issuing the Final Prediction later this evening. Be safe if traveling, thank you for the support, and have a great day!
