First Prediction for January 23, 2017

Good morning everyone. Attached is the First Prediction for Monday, January 23. There is a lot to discuss about, so let’s get to it.

Mostly sleet and some freezing rain is expected to enter the area sometime Monday morning; the average ETA among model guidance is around 10 AM. Accumulations are a bit of an uncertainty, but I suspect they could be significant (>.25″ of sleet), more than enough to cause travel disruptions, particularly for the higher elevations. Temperatures in the mountains will be in the upper 20s while valley temperatures will be in the lower 30s.

I am also concerned that temperatures will linger below freezing longer than what is forecasted by the NWS. If temperatures stay at or below freezing, especially for the mountain areas going into Monday night into Tuesday morning, both delays and closings could be on the table for Tuesday.

This remains a fluid situation. The start time (indicated by any future Winter Weather Advisory) will likely determine the course of action the school districts will take. If an advisory were to start at 10 AM or earlier, then I would go lean towards a closing. If it starts at 11 AM or later, then I think the school districts will try to squeeze in an early dismissal.

The Final Prediction will be release later this evening as more short-range model guidance comes into play. By then, an advisory may be issued regarding tomorrow’s event. Have a good day everyone!
